KERALA ENGINEERING RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI) is one of the pioneering institutions of its kind in our country. It provides useful services by fulfilling needs in the field of Investigation, Testing, Hydraulic Model Studies, Consultancy, Training, Quality Control and R & D in the field of Civil Engineering and Water Resources Engineering in particular. It cater the needs of the irrigation department and other sister departments in the state besides providing testing and consultancy services for other public and private organisations.

The proposal for starting the Institute was approved by the State Government in April 1958.The foundation stone for the main building was laid by the then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the 26th April 1958.The constructions were completed in two years and the Institute was formally inaugurated by Governor of Kerala on the 13th June 1960.

The institute is under the control of Chief Engineer, Investigation, Design and Research Board (IDRB) and is headed by a Director in the rank of superintending Engineer. There are five divisions under the control of Joint directors/ Executive Engineers and there are 18 subdivisions and 27 sections under them.

The Institute was planned on a comprehensive scale with excellent laboratory facilities for testing soil and other construction materials and for hydraulic model studies. Facilities are now available for non destructive testing and in-situ studies in the fields of Irrigation, Navigation, Flood control, Coastal Engineering Buildings, Roads etc. This institute presently takes up studies in the field of Civil Engineering for the State Government, Quasi Government and also for Private organizations. In addition to the well-equipped Material testing, Geotechninical and Hydraulic laboratories at the head quarters at Peechi , quality control laboratories are set up at different district locations under the quality control divisions. The NABL accreditation of laboratories is on the vein. A good library and conference room add to the infrastructure.

The institute is located at Peechi, off NH 544 at Panancherry /Pattikkad. Distance from Thrissur is 23km and from Pattikkad is 9km. It is located adjacent to Peechi dam and Kerala Forest Research Institute.
