The Kerala Engineering Research Institute, Peechi
The Kerala Engineering Research Institute, Peechi is one of the pioneering research institutions of its kind in our country. It plays a vital part in fundamental and applied research studies in the field of Civil Engineering. The proposal for starting a research Institute were approved by the State Government in April 1958.The foundation stone for the main building was laid by the the Prime Minister if India on the 26th April 1958.The constructions were completed in two years and the Institute was formally inaugrated by Governor of Kerala on the 13th June 1960.The Institute was planned on a comprehensive scale with facilities for tests on soil and other construction materials , for hydraulic model studies for studies in hydrology etc. based on data collected from all over the site. The institute was started for finding solutions to several problems which arise at different stages of planning and execution of various development projects in the fields of Irrigation, Navigation, Flood control Buildings, Roads etc. This institute presently takes on studies and research works in the field of Civil Engineering for the State Government, Quasi Government Institutions and also for Private Organizations. It also undertakes externally funded research projects. Sedimentation studies of major Dams, lakes of the state are being carried out by this institute. The institute is a major training centre of the Irrigation Department providing training programmes and refresher courses for the benefit of department engineers. The Institute has well-equipped materials testing and geotechnical engineering laboratories .
